The lesser-known effects of dehydration on mental health

We often hear that you need to drink enough water to stay physically healthy, but few people realise just how crucial hydration is for mental health. Dehydration doesn't just show up as thirst; it can also have a major impact on your brain, affecting your mood, your concentration and even your ability to handle stress.

How does dehydration affect your brain?

Your brain is made up largely of water, and even mild dehydration can have noticeable effects. Studies show that dehydration of as little as 1 to 2% of your body weight can impair your ability to concentrate, raise anxiety levels and trigger headaches. This is because water helps maintain the electrolyte balance that's essential for nerve signal transmission. Less water means less efficient transmission.

On top of that, chronic dehydration can contribute to cognitive fatigue – a feeling where every task seems harder and staying motivated becomes a real challenge. In other words, when you're not properly hydrated, your brain has to work much harder to do the same tasks.

Symptoms that often go unnoticed

We tend to associate dehydration with physical signs like a dry mouth or less frequent urination. But very often, the first signs that your body lacks water are more subtle and affect your mental wellbeing directly. Unexplained fatigue, trouble concentrating, increased irritability? These symptoms could be directly linked to your hydration level.

Older adults, for example, are particularly at risk, since their sense of thirst decreases with age, leaving them more exposed to dehydration without even realising it. This can directly affect their mood and cognitive ability.

Why daily hydration matters

It's recommended to drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day to stay healthy, but this also depends on your physical activity, your diet and your environment. For people who are especially active or under mental stress, water needs may be higher.

Dehydration doesn't just affect the body; it can also impact your mental wellbeing. If you're feeling low on energy, struggling to concentrate or experiencing mood swings, check your hydration. Remember to drink regularly to stay optimally hydrated throughout the day.
