How to prevent a hangover?

5 tips to soften your mornings after a night out

1 - Drink in moderation

The best way to prevent a “hangover” remains drinking in moderation. Human metabolism responds to both inter-individual and intra-individual variables, so we all react differently to alcohol.

Some people are very sensitive, and just a few drinks are enough to trigger acute intoxication. Others, meanwhile, can drink heavily without a worry. Rest assured, these are exceptions, with a richer enzymatic toolkit than yours.

There’s no secret to it, it all comes down to moderation.

2 - Get good rest

Quality sleep is essential: your body needs energy to properly eliminate alcohol’s toxic metabolites. However, sleep is often disrupted by alcohol. To avoid this problem, have your last drink at least 2h before going to bed.

This gives your body extra time to metabolise the alcohol. Lack of sleep is a factor that worsens hangover symptoms. It regularly leads to irritability, fatigue and even concentration problems.

3 - Hydrate properly

Drinking water regularly before, during and after any alcohol consumption helps prevent dehydration.

Through its diuretic effect, linked to the inhibition of antidiuretic hormone secretion, alcohol depletes your body’s water reserves. A regular water intake can help ease certain symptoms such as headaches or fatigue. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty, as by then it’s too late.

4 - Don’t mix your drinks

Some drinks still seem to be more harmful than others. Alcoholic drinks have a complex composition.

They mainly contain ethanol and water, but also by-products of alcoholic fermentation such as organic compounds, tannins and highly toxic methanol.

This is the case, for example, with whisky, bourbon or wine. One tip: stick to a single drink, preferably a light-coloured one.

5 - Take a food supplement

Drinking alcohol will inevitably have a negative impact on your body. It depletes your vitamin and nutrient reserves, which will need to be replenished quickly.

Taking a suitable food supplement will be a great help. Firstly, it provides your body with what it needs to properly eliminate the alcohol. Secondly, it offers extra support against unwanted effects.

Stay alert when researching, as many companies make false claims.
