HANGOVER and Sleep Quality

Melissa Officinalis L.: A Natural Ally in the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders and Insomnia

Discover one of Hang-over's key active ingredients:

Melissa officinalis L. belongs to a family of more than 20,000 plant species and is used in various traditional medical systems around the world. [1]

This plant is traditionally used to treat mental health and central nervous system disorders, cardiovascular and respiratory problems, various types of cancer, as well as a memory enhancer, cardiac tonic, antidepressant, sleep aid, and antidote. [2,3,4,5,6,7]

Phytochemical studies of M. officinalis have demonstrated the presence of various secondary plant compounds, including terpenes such as rosmarinic acid (mono-, sesqui-, and triterpenes) as well as phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins). [8,9]

The most important active components of M. officinalis are volatile compounds (e.g., geranial, neral, citronellal, and geraniol), triterpenes (e.g., ursolic acid and folic acid), and phenolic compounds (e.g., the cis- and trans-isomers of RA, caffeic acid derivatives, luteolin, naringin, and hesperidin) [10,11,12]

Your Role

The results of a prospective, open-label pilot study (involving stressed participants with mild to moderate anxiety disorders and sleep disorders) showed that oral administration of Cyracos (a patented, standardized extract from M. officinalis leaves containing over 7% RA and 15% hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) at a dose of 600 mg/day for 15 days significantly reduced anxiety symptoms by 18%, improved anxiety-related symptoms by 15%, and reduced insomnia by 42%. [13]

These results show that lemon balm is a promising active ingredient for treating hangovers.
