Can cold dehydrate? Myth or reality?

The Hedonistlabs laboratory

When we think of dehydration, it's often in summer, under a blazing sun, that we imagine the body losing water. But did you know that cold weather can also lead to dehydration? This lesser-known but just as real phenomenon can affect your well-being and performance, especially in winter. In this article, find out how and why the cold can dehydrate, as well as tips on how to stay hydrated during the colder months.

How does cold dehydrate the body?

1.1. Dry breathing
When you breathe in cold weather, your body warms and humidifies the dry air you inhale. This process results in water loss through breathing, often greater than in summer.

1.2 Reduced sensation of thirst
Cold reduces the sensation of thirst. This is because the body prioritizes temperature regulation by sending more blood to vital organs, masking the need to drink. As a result, you drink less water, while your body continues to lose water.

1.3. The effect of cold diuresis
Cold causes blood vessels to contract to preserve internal heat. This increases urine production, leading to increased fluid loss. This phenomenon, known as "cold diuresis", contributes directly to dehydration.

1.4. Invisible perspiration
Even in winter, you sweat, especially if you wear several layers of clothing or engage in physical activity. Under your warm clothes, this perspiration often goes unnoticed, but it contributes to water loss.

What are the signs of dehydration in winter?

Winter dehydration can manifest itself as :

  • A feeling of fatigue or weakness.
  • Dry, chapped lips.
  • Dry, irritated skin.
  • Darker or less frequent urination.
  • Headaches or dizziness.

How can you prevent dehydration in cold weather?

    3.1. Drink regularly

    • Don't rely on feeling thirsty: drink water or hot beverages such as infusions or tea.
    • Hydrating drinks such as AQUAPOP are ideal for effective, pleasant rehydration.

    3.2 Eat water-rich foods

    • Include moisturizing fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits, cucumbers and zucchini in your diet.
    • Soups and broths are perfect for combining hydration and comfort in winter.

    3.3. Protect your skin

    • Use a moisturizing cream to prevent water loss from cold-exposed skin.
    • Wear suitable clothing to limit excessive perspiration.

3.4. Adapt your hydration to your activity

    • If you're doing sport or walking for long periods, remember to drink more to compensate for losses due to exertion.

Although it doesn't make you "sweat," the cold can actually dehydrate you. Accelerated breathing, reduced sensation of thirst and cold diuresis are all mechanisms that promote water loss in winter. Adopting good hydration habits is therefore essential for preserving your energy and health, even as temperatures drop.
